Automotive EDR "Black Box" Retrieval and Analysis

Quest Engineering provides expert automotive Event Data Recorder (EDR) retrieval and forensic analysis for passenger vehicles and light trucks involved in collisions.

Often referred to as a vehicle “black box,” an EDR records critical, objective data from the seconds surrounding a crash. Depending on the vehicle make and model, this data provides vital insights into:

  • Vehicle speed and change in velocity (Delta-V)

  • Driver inputs (brake application and accelerator status)

  • Safety systems (seat belt status and airbag deployment)

Quest Engineering not only retrieves typical EDR black box data, but also other types of electronic data modern vehicles often contain including data from Global Positioning System (GPS) units and Infotainment systems.

Our Forensic Approach to Crash Data Recovery

Our certified professionals follow industry-leading procedures to image available black box data, preserve supporting documentation, and accurately interpret the results.

Sometimes associating the black box data to the subject accident isn't straight forward.  We never analyze EDR data in isolation. To ensure the highest level of accuracy, our engineers evaluate the data alongside:

  • Physical vehicle damage

  • Scene evidence

  • Date of accident photos

  • Surveillance and dash cam video footage

  • Witness statements and police reports

This integrated accident reconstruction approach helps clarify driver actions, crash severity, event timing, and collision dynamics while correcting any misinterpretations of the electronic data.
